With the marathon just two days away, my focus right now is on rest, nutrition, and carbo-loading. The rest portion I have down: bed by 9:30 – sleep by 10. The nutrition and carbo-loading are where my mind races. I’ve successfully completed two 20 milers and one 22 miler in training with my normal diet, [...]

With the marathon just five short days away, I’ve noticed a few things: I am craving a long run and was recently caught running in place by a friend I have a hard time talking about anything but the marathon (and am therefore nervous I’ve become boring and won’t have anything to talk about after [...]

The marathon is officially one week from today. The carbo-loading has begun. The weather is incessantly being checked. Bedtime is officially 10pm every night for the rest of the week. And the only conversations I’m capable of fully being a part of revolve around running. More marathon posts to come this week!

I’m now 90% convinced pull-back weeks in marathon training are necessary. The other 10% will come if I can successfully complete 16 miles on Friday. My confidence in the pull-back week comes from the fact that my past three runs have been some of my fastest yet. Here’s the recap: Friday, 5 miles: 9:20 pace [...]

I’ve officially adopted a new plan for my marathon training and I’m pretty excited about it. I’m now using Runner’s World SmartCoach. It’s a great online tool that uses previous race times to calculate what you can expect your race pace to be for the marathon (or your race distance of choice) and the pace [...]
Weekend in Review

What does one do the weekend after a lackluster 8 mile run in the heat? A little active rest in the form of an old hobby… Relaxation at a Phillies game with a friend (they won )… Some necessary Biochem productivity…. And redemption in the form of a 6 mile tempo run… Mile 1 - [...]
