Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and I am starting this blog to document my training for the Philadelphia Marathon, which I am running on November 21, 2010 in an effort to raise money for The Food Trust, a Philadelphia nonprofit that strives to make healthy food available to all through educating schools and communities and supporting local farmers’ markets.
I personally fell in love with farmers’ markets while on a trip to California’s wine country, an area with everything I love: amazing food, wine and nature. I look forward to exploring the farmers’ markets supported by The Food Trust and sharing my delicious finds and the meals I create with them.
I began running in January 2009 as a way to get fit and healthy. While living next to Central Park in NYC, what started as thirty minutes on the treadmill gradually led to the 6 mile loop in the park before work! In September 2009, I ran the Philadelphia Distance Run – my first half marathon – and loved every second. I crossed the finish line in 2:00:32 with a huge smile on my face and an amazing group of friends waiting for me. I have a few races planned over the next few months leading up to the marathon, including a 24 hour relay this summer – I can’t wait to share all the details
.
In January 2011, I’ll begin a new journey to receive my Masters in Nutrition at Drexel University and become a Registered Dietitian. I look forward to sharing my running adventures, healthy meals, lessons from school and a few glasses of wine along the way
. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at milesformarkets@gmail.com.

Cute new blog!
Congrats on your decision to go back to school and good luck with your marathon training! Also – that is an amazingly large bottle of wine, lol.
Thanks Anne! You’re so sweet! And yes, the bottle was incredibly huge. I was practically falling over when holding it…but it was worth the risk for that photo
Hey Melissa! Just wandered over from your comment – I’ve been thinking about doing the Full in Philly this year too (it’d be my second, still deciding if I want to do another one…heh)
Good luck with the start of training! And, if you have any questions about the RD stuff, feel free to ask!
Thanks Heather!! You should definitely do Philly! The course is really flat…it’d be a breeze for you
And thanks offering your help with the RD stuff. I’m sure I’ll have some questions once I start the program!
Yay, you started a blog!! You should have told me! It’s great, I love the title
Hi Melissa,
Great blog and great fundraising idea. As an RD myself, I love inspiring stories on how colleagues are getting involved with the local food movement. The Food Trust is doing great things to increase healthy food access in our neighbood and from what I hear, exploring opportunities across the U.S. Good luck with your training and your studies — I look forward to swapping recipes with you!
I just found your blog and I am excited to read more. I also hope you keep up the blog once you go to school to become an RD. I love nutrition and would love to learn more!!
Thanks! I definitely plan on keeping up with the blog through school. It’ll be a great way to share what I learn! (Although so much of it is science-based…I’ll try to keep the equations to a minimum
) Thanks so much for stopping by!
Hi Melissa! It was nice meeting you today! Good luck with your training for the marathon and with school! I look forward to reading about your progress.
Thanks Tammy! And you too

Hi Melissa,
I’ve reading your blog for about 4 months and find it delightful. I am hope you remember me, I am your second cousin by marriage; my wife Abby is your mom’s first cousin. We now live in North Carolina, ask your mom if you don’t remember us. Anyway, I am in Philadelphia during the Marathon weekend visiting family, friends and running the half. If possible we should meet before the race; I think it will be fun. Write back and tell me a time and place. Good luck with your race and have fun running.
Wow, we have a ton in common. I just started running about a month ago and I have made good progress, with my ultimate running goal being the Philadelphia half marathon in Nov. 2012! I will do my first 5K this summer, my first 10K this fall, and then just try to keep it up and get better and faster for the half. I’m looking forward to reading through your archives–I bet I’ll learn a lot!
